I've lugged 3kg+ Acers and they're actually not bad if you have a backpack. Consider that you may also need to carry textbooks and assignments around though -- you can't wear 2 backpacks comfortably. A large laptop backpack *may* have enough room to accomodate a textbook or two, but at that point it will be fairly hefty. Select a backpack instead of a carry bag, it helps a lot.
